Winnipeg Arena 1955 - 2006
Winnipeg Arena 1955 - 2006
Winnipeg Arena was an indoor arena located at 1430 Maroons Road in Winnipeg, Manitoba, across the street from Canad Inns Stadium. Built in 1955, it was owned by community-owned Winnipeg Enterprises Corporation. At the time of the arena's construction, Enterprises was headed by prominent businessman Culver Riley and had borrowed about $2.5 million, most of it from the City of Winnipeg, to build the Stadium and Arena. At the time, Winnipeg was Canada's third largest city and the new Winnipeg Arena was considered to be the finest facility in the western half of North America. The building's first major tenant was the Winnipeg Warriors (minor pro) of the Western Hockey League (minor pro) from 1955--1961. Its major tenant subsequently was the Winnipeg Jets of the WHA and the NHL from 1972-1996. In 1972 the Winnipeg Arena hosted game 3 of the famous "Summit Series" between Team Canada and the USSR. The game ended in a 4--4 tie. Following the departure of the Jets to Phoenix, Arizona, the Arena's prime tenant from 1996-2004 was the Manitoba Moose of the International Hockey League, and later of the American Hockey League. The Winnipeg Arena was also home to the Winnipeg Warriors of the WHL from 1980 through 1984, and the Winnipeg Monarchs of the same league in the 1960s and 70s. Also a popular location for filming movies, the building was used in the made-for-television Inside the Osmond's and the ESPN film A Season on the Brink. It hosted the fourth WWF In Your House pay-per ...

A Frosty MTB Tour de Winnipeg
A Frosty MTB Tour de Winnipeg
This video captures part of a terrific 8 hours of "Frosty" winter biking a la "Tour de Winnipeg". I had over 6 hours of pedal time on city park paths, river edge trails and even the newly opened "River Trail" on the Red, along with a couple pitstops at the Forks for coffee at the Junction and later some mini-donuts by the indoor fireplace. I started early with lights on, enjoyed the quiet morning views of hoar frost covered trees, met plenty of hardy Winnipeggers out for walks, runs and skiis, cruised around the Legislature, caught some dudes practicing their snowboard tricks and made it to the St. Boniface Cathedral in time to hear the noon bells. I rode past the Museum of Human Rights being constructed and across the Esplanade Riel Bridge into St Boniface. Over at Fort Gibraltar, they are getting ready for the annual Festival du Voyager with large snow blocks made ready for sculpters and snow slides prepared. I rode down some of the Seine River, Whittier Park, the Churchill Parkway, Wellington Ave and around the Assinboine Park "Monkey Trails" and the Leo Mol Garden path on my way home via the Moray Parkway, Woodhaven and Sturgeon Creek. The sky was snowladen, but held off mostly and at - 15 C with only a light wind; it was a perfect day for winter biking. Very good times!

WINNIPEG FUN TIMES I
WINNIPEG FUN TIMES I
A video diary of my Summer 2010 trip to visit family in Winnipeg, featuring my nieces and nephews playing around along with silly drawings, etc. I didn't take as much footage as I wanted to, but I came up with what I think is a neat way of making a video diary: animated writing via Wacom tablet. The whole thing ended up being lots longer than I planned, so this is just part I. Part II will feature events that came after we returned from the cottage to home, including some mild tornado footage, checking out the aftermath, and my brother in law's experience chasing the storm. Footage recorded with my Kodak Zi8. Animated writing and silly pictures drawn with a Wacom tablet in the Gimp. Editing in Cinelerra. Manitou Api - Trailer 2 (Mysterious Building in Winnipeg)
Manitou Api - Trailer 2 (Mysterious Building in Winnipeg)
Directed by Andy Pickard, Cindy Pickard and Dave Courchene Produced by Cindy Pickard, Andy Pickard, Tom Bee and Robert Armstrong All Music courtesy of SOAR Records Drums Songs by The Red Shadow Singers Filmed in Canada and Cambridge, UK Featuring Frank Albo and Dave Courchene "MANITOU API is reminiscent of Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol, but with a decisive difference: It is true." New York Times best selling author Larry Dossey, MD This is a preview of Manitou Api which is now available on DVD. Represented by Rites of Passage and producer's reprentatives Ostrow and Company. In the heart of Canada, Anishinabe elder Dave Courchene strikes up an unusual partnership with an architectural scholar, Frank Albo. At the center of the documentary lies a classically designed building in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Locals know it as the legislative building for the province, but Frank recognizes it as an homage to the legendary Solomon's Temple with its Ark of the Covenant. Loaded with classical and esoteric symbolism, this Masonic temple goes a step further. It resonates Native American themes. Dave Courchene puzzled over the meaning and placement of some of his cultural symbols. But, upon meeting Frank, he begins to see a connection between the building and the spiritual teachings of his people and ancestors. He invites Frank to join in a ceremony and together a bond is formed that may help release valuable information to a new generation: a generation that has been prophesied as the new ...

Wipeout Canada Audition - Sonny Ayson, Winnipeg, MB
My name is Sonny Ayson from Winnipeg, Manitoba. In my spare time, I like working out, saving children, dancing and battling crime. People ask me all the time if I'm a super hero. I usually tell them that I am a mere mortal that has super hero-like powers. I rarely feel challenged by the ordinary world. After watching Wipeout Canada numerous times, I feel this is the challenge I needed to prove that my balls are bigger than life itself.

Me and my cousin randomly came across a very bright flying object in the sky, that was appearing to get slighly brighter at times. It was perfectly circle and stould perfectly still. It appeared to be about 5-10 times brighter than the next brightest star in the sky. Have no idea what it may be, and hope we can get some answers.

Winnipeg Goldeyes: July 31, 2011 Highlights
The St. Paul Saints scored a pair of runs with two out in the 11th inning and now have a share of first place in the American Association's North Division. An RBI single by Argelis Nunez followed by an error on third baseman Brian Myrow gave the Saints two runs in the 11th and a 6-4 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes in front of 5476 spectators on a beautiful day for baseball in downtown Winnipeg. With the win, St. Paul won the three-game weekend series in Winnipeg 2-1 and moved into a first-place tie with the Goldeyes. Both teams have identical records of 43-30. The Goldeyes have lost two in a row and are now 3-7 in their last 10. Ace Walker started for the Goldeyes and was looking to become the team's all-time leader in wins with 37. Meanwhile, Rick Forney was trying to win his 300th game as the Goldeyes manager. After the game, Walker, who went 5.2 innings, allowing only one run on five hits, was devastated by the outcome. "It started off good for 3.1 innings, but they (the Saints) complained on almost every pitch," Walker said. "At that point it seemed like the (strike) zone changed. I guess if you complain enough he'll (home plate umpire Kurt Branin) change his strike zone. "I mean, just look at the numbers. How many guys do I walk a game? Zero to one? Today, I had three walks and I didn't walk a guy until the fifth inning. I don't know. Personally, I thought the strike zone changed." Walker had allowed only two walks in his previous five starts, but today he had ...

Winnipeg Goldeyes: August 24, 2011 Highlights
The chipping away at clinching a playoff spot continued Wednesday night at Shaw Park. The Winnipeg Goldeyes pushed their magic number down to two to clinch a playoff spot with a 7-4 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks before 6679 spectators in downtown Winnipeg. The Goldeyes remain four games up on the St. Paul Saints for first place in the North Division with seven games remaining in the regular season. Winnipeg scored three times in the first inning, including a two-run single by Luis Alen, to take a 3-0 lead. Fargo replied in the top of the third when Carlo Cota hit a three-run home run to tie the game. It would stay that way until the sixth inning when the Goldeyes put up another three runs on the scoreboard. Justin Bass hit a two-run single and Price Kendall followed that with an RBI single of his own. The Goldeyes scored more in the seventh, while Fargo finished the scoring when Winnipeg pitcher Aaron Cook was called for a balk with a runner on third base in the eighth inning. Luis Alen paced Winnipeg with three hits and two RBI in the first inning, while Bass also had a couple RBI. Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida went six innings to record his 10th win of the season. He joins manager Rick Forney as the only Goldeyes pitchers to post back-to-back 10-plus win seasons in franchise history. Jamie Vermilyea tossed the ninth inning for his 15th save of the season. Fargo starting pitcher Jake Laber takes the loss. The Goldeyes and RedHawks meet again at Shaw Park ...
